전통 악기 중 '편경'이라는 악기가 있다. 돌을 재료로 만든 타악기가 있는데 형태와 쓰임새가 그와 비슷해서 '편자(도자)' 라고 부른다. 어떻게 마찰을 일으키는 지에 따라서 다른 소리가 난다. 엄청 약하게 움직이면 돌을 긁는 소리, 맷돌 가는 소리가 난다. 통통 약하게 치면 종소리같이 명쾌한 소리가 나기도 한다. 두께와 밀도에 따라 소리의 높낮이가 다르다.
